Grain-size dependence of water retention in a model aggregated soil

چکیده

We experimentally examined the amount of water retention in a model soil composed aggregated glass beads. The was characterized by two size parameters: aggregates D and monomer particles (composing aggregates) d. In experiment, sprinkled on model-soil system that has an open top surface drainable sieve bottom. When exceeded threshold (retainable limit), draining flux balanced with flux. weight variations retained drained were measured to confirm this (steady) state quantify water. defined steady as W0 relationship among W0,d D. As result, it revealed increases d decreases simply due capillary effects. Regarding dependence, turned out becomes maximum around D≃500 μm. value maximizing is determined void formation structure, effect, gravity.

prediction of soil water retention curve using soil particle-size distribution

the soil water retention curve (swrc) is a basic characteristic of the determination of soil hydraulic properties, including unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. measurement of this curve is essential to research, thus scientists have focused on indirect methods such as pedotransfer functions and empirical relationships to estimate swrc easily. since there is a close relationship between swrc an...

Multiscale Pedotransfer Functions for Soil Water Retention

Soil hydraulic properties are needed in globaland regionalscale circulation models for hydrologic and climate forecasting. They are also necessary in pointand nonpoint-source contaminant transport models. Prediction accuracy of these models is highly dependent on the quality of the model parameters. Collecting the required soil hydraulic parameters by direct measurement at any model grid scale ...

Grain-size dependence of intergranular magnetic correlations in nanostructured metals

Magnetic small-angle neutron scattering experiments were performed on nanostructured Fe, Co and Ni samples of varying grain size, produced by inert-gas condensation. The experiments show that the spontaneous spatial magnetic correlations forming in zero-field extend over many individual grains. These correlations depend strongly on grain size. In Fe, they have a minimum at a grain size of aroun...

Grain-size dependence of plastic deformation in nanocrystalline Fe

Plastic deformation of nanocrystalline Fe was investigated by nanoindentation. Samples, synthesized by mechanical attrition, consisted of powder particles with diameters greater than 30 mm. The average grain diameters within the particles of different samples ranged from 10 nm to 10 mm. To avoid potential artifacts, samples were prepared without use of heat treatment, and measurements were cond...

Characterizing Nonrigid Aggregated Soil-Water Medium Using its Shrinkage Curve

The properties of the soil-water medium are presented in the literature independent of its internal organization and operation. The objective of this study is to develop and test a conceptual model that used a continuously measured shrinkage curve (Se) to describe the functional organization of the soil-water medium. In this model, two functional porosities (micro and macro) are delineated and ...
